Each week, in addition to my win and loss predictions, I enjoy further mocking a few select teams that I have deemed "Sunday's worst." These are the teams that I am sure will lose and, in most cases, I expect to be humiliated. With glorious week 1 already trucking, it was clear the Saints and Packers offered no glaring mismatch. However, the remainder of this week's contests have their fair share of lopsided matches. Here are Sunday's worst in no particular order.
Bengals: The Browns are nowhere near the best team in this league. In fact, I am sure much of Cleveland is praying pretty hard for a chance at a wild card spot. That said, no team this year has taken a farther step backwards than the Cincinnati Bengals! Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco are gone and Cedric Benson is the only tangible weapon on this team. The Bengals have a weak offensive line and probably the least talented receiving corps in the league over the past decade.
Conversely, The Browns will be starting Colt McCoy at quarterback after a greatly improved preseason performance. Colt will have several veteran receivers to target in Benjamin Watson and Mohamed Massaquoi, not to mention this year's Madden cover boy, Peyton Hillis in the backfield. Cleveland's improved defense is starting to gain momentum as well, a hallmark of a Mike Holmgren team. Look for the Browns to cover the spread in this one against a sorry Cincinnati team in Cleveland.
Jaguars: Only days ago, David Garrard thought he was in the driver's seat as Jacksonville's starting quarterback. Today, Luke McCown is slated to start. Before the Jaguars released Garrard, the AFC South was wide open with the absence of Colt's signal calling iron man, Peyton Manning. With the Colts arguably reduced to a team with what can now only be described as "playoff aspirations," the rest of the division should have an opportunity to win their division. What does Jacksonville do to capitalize? They get rid of the only man with a respectable amount of reps with the starting wide-outs. That simply doesn't make sense.
In Contrast, The Titans resigned Chris Johnson and brought in three time pro bowl passer Matt Hasselbeck to help mentor their first round draft pick, Jake Locker. The trunk of this team is far more sound and has greater moving parts than Jacksonville. There is no doubt the Jags will lose this game. The only question is whether or not we will see Jacksonville's first round draft pick, Blaine Gabbert take over in the first half.
Dolphins: I don't really have anything terrible to say about the Miami Dolphins. They have made some decent moves and have the makings of a winning team. They might even make the playoffs if they can navigate through their terrifying 2011 schedule with a couple upset wins. However, having said that, their week 1 match-up with the Patriots won't be one of them! New England is the scariest thing since Ross Perot ran for president. Pats win, in convincing fashion.
